Reading Reflection 3

1) The main theme of this book is that we all have a choice on how to think, and experience life to make decision each day to become successful.  Dweck asserts that there are two ways of taking on life. A fixed mindset, or a mindset that allows for growth and development everyday. The growth mindset means that an individual is always learning and growing from mistakes. 2) This book is applicable to ENT 3003 because it is a manifestation of success.  Essentially, Dweck breaks down the mind based on her own research and experience in terms of not only business, but all facets of the experience of life.  Ir is applicable to Entrepreneurship because in order to be successful, one must not assume that they know everything and stop growing.  For an entrepreneur to be successful, they have to be ahead of the curve and come up with innovative ideas to solve the problems that life throws at their business. 3) I would instruct the class to find ten minutes to sit down, med...

Celebrating Failure

1) For this class, I have failed to submit a number of assignments and I have failed to leave comments of a number of occasions.  This has affected my grade in a way greater than I had calculated although I believe I will still end up with a B+.  I am in the Innovation Academy and I have been in school since January of last year without any breaks, and I am continuing in the spring.  I also work every day during the week. I do not intend for these to be excused, just reasoning for why I feel burnt out this semester. I am also taking Beginning Japanese 1 for my language credit and I have been focusing on that class more so than this one.  I have gotten cocky with that class at the end of this semester as well and I did not study for the last exam as much as I should have because I felt confident I knew the material. 2) I have learned that I need to balance my self academically by balancing out the rest of my life.  I have learned that even if I think I know wha...

Exit Strategy

1) I intend to stay with my business venture for a number of decades.  I am passionate about Occupational Therapy and I am passionate about helping those in need and teaching what I have learned, for the greater good of humanity. As OPT for Refugees is an NGO, I would not be looking to sell it off, although if an opportunity presents it self, I would not be opposed to handing it over to good hands.  2) I am not concerned with wealth because wealth does not equate to a content and fulfilled life.  The rewards are greater if I am doing meaningful work.  This is why I would choose to stick with this entrepreneurial venture for the long run.  I would chose to hand it off to a trusted board member who I have worked with for a number of years and who I would trust to make ethical decisions for the group going forward.  3) I would say that this kind of venture requires me to stay involved because working internationally requires familiar faces for other organi...

Venture Concept No.1

Opportunity: Refugees from Syria, Myanmar, Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela have the unmet need of physical and occupational therapy services. These services would allow them to get live more independently in their new conditions. Civil Wars and economic crises are causing these kinds of displacements all around the globe. Customers now are relying on UNHCR and the WHO to provide medical aide however OT and PT is not always the highest priority. This opportunity is huge for the greater good of the human race. It is dealing with a humanitarian crisis in a world with the highest rates of displaced individuals ever. The window of opportunity will be open for as long as there are people being forced out of their country due to violence and war. Innovation:  I am not selling a product or a service, I am going to be getting funding through the IOM and the UNHCR as well as grant money from WHO and WFOT. We would be providing innovative and intensive occupation...

21A - Reading Reflection No.2

The book I chose to read from the second list of reading was Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. The general theme of this book is to get the reader to realize what is happening inside their own heads to better allow them to utilize the different modes of thinking. The first being intuitive and emotional thoughts, while the second slower mode of thinking is more analytical and logical. Kahneman’s goal is to make the reader reflect upon themselves to see their own faults, and to realize that the truth may not just be what is being repeated day after day. This rings true about what we tell ourselves, and what we hear from outside of our own minds. The one thing that made me think of class was the mentioning of the gorilla suit video. This book has a lot more to do with class than that though. In the beginning of the book Kahneman emphasizes that the future is unpredictable and it is up to us to see the opportunities that arise out of it. Reflecting upon my own business idea,...

Growing my Social Capital

Patti Grogan - Domain Expert Background: Head of the Florida Department of Children and Families I found this individual on accident and I am very glad I did. Her daughter is an undergraduate student at FIU in Miami and was visiting UF for the LSU game a couple weeks back.  We got into talking and I mentioned working with refugees and her eyes lit up and she mentioned that her mom is in charge of the Department of Children and Families.  I contacted this individual last weekend and asked her politely for her moms contact information and she gladly gave me her email. I sent her an email Wednesday asking for feedback on my video pitch and she has not replied with feedback yet although her daughter has texted me back confirming that my email has been received.  This individual is very high profile so she is formulating her response appropriately which I understand takes time. She is also a very busy person from my understanding. She can share with me a bit of insight a...
