My customer would no longer be practicing their hobby, due to their displacement unless they have the resources available to do so. They could be any one with any skillset. They would have walked vast distances in all kinds of weather and would have been exposed to the elements. They may sleep in tents or just outside. They do have children and families although some of their family members may have been killed or they could have been separated. Some of their children may have been victims of war or genocide. They may have adopted orphans who have lost their parents, or they may be children themselves. If Muslims, they would rely on the Quran for guidance and faith. They could or could not support Bashar al Assad. I have seen many PBS Frontline specials and I know many Syrians are divided on the conflict. They could be any age although I can say that they probably feel much older due to the adversary they have endured. They could have many health issues, or only a few. Those coming to us would have limb injuries or other psycho-motor disabilities due to stroke or a bullet wound to the head. These could have occurred due to explosions, gunfire, or even just from being exposed to the elements. They also could have developed these disabilities from living in poor health conditions. Also, they could have also had these disabilities and have never gotten treatment for them.
I have nothing in common with the customer. I am a fortunate white male from a middle class family in America. I am dedicating my life to this because I have been so fortunate. I stumbled upon a Japanese concept called "ikigai" which is the balance between what an individual loves, what an individual is good at, what the world needs, and what can be paid for. I have worked with those with disabilities since I was 14 years old and around the world, refugees and those who have been displaced seem the most in need. If you look at my entrepreneurship story from the first couple weeks of class, it was proven to me that something can be paid for by other organizations world wide, if a need is unmet. I love the idea of dedicating my life to helping other become more independent, and I love connecting to those who speak a different language than my own.
