Assignment 2A: Bug List

1. The fact that segregation still exists in Gainesville.

WHY IT EXISTS: Historical cycles of poverty that stem from slavery and the Jim Crow era have yet to be broken. Lack of funding for education in Florida, especially Alachua County, allows this problem to persist.

2. That Pascal’s Coffee House closes at 6:00pm.

WHY IT EXISTS: To always come out with a profit at the end of the day, even though they have to kick out all of their customers, even when every seat is taken.

3. That even though I have a smart TV, Chromecast, and a Fire stick, Apple restricts screen mirroring with all products except an Apple TV.

WHY IT EXISTS: Apple wants to assure they are not missing out on any opportunity to make money.

4. When UF students living in off campus housing leave their furniture out for it to get rained on when their lease is up.

WHY IT EXISTS: Students cannot take everything with them and either have no place to store it, or have no need for it anymore.

5. Only 28% of eligible voters in Alachua County turned out to the polls for the latest election.

WHY IT EXISTS: Individuals have to work, go to school, study, cook, etc. on voting day and may not make it to the polls on time. (Voting day could be a federal holiday and communities could get together and have a festival)

6. The interior of the original 43rd Street Deli has gotten dirty and many of the booths and chairs are falling apart.

WHY IT EXISTS: Management may not have enough revenue to allocate funds for new flooring and furniture.

7. That there is limited parking for the businesses under the Standard.

WHY IT EXISTS: The block is surrounded by residential areas and the parking garage is inconvenient unless you live there.

8. That Gainesville is not a walkable city

WHY IT EXISTS: Destination points are spread out and everybody has traditionally been reliant on cars or scooters. Busses work but not for the entire city of Gainesville.

9. That Leonardo’s by the slice will eventually be torn down to build another lackluster building like the standard.

WHY IT EXISTS: The property value of the south east corner of 13th and University is too high to keep only a handful of businesses open there.

10. That there are not enough public parks in the city of Gainesville.

WHY IT EXISTS: Taxes are allocated for other services. The city has not put emphasis on small public areas in the past and a lot of land is already developed.

11. That modern architecture is not designed for artistic expression.

WHY IT EXISTS: Architects design for cost efficiency for the customer.

12. The lack of a Persian studies department at the University of Florida.

WHY IT EXISTS: There may not be a prominent Persian academic in Gainesville who wants to start such a program.

13. The absence of modern railway systems connecting major cities in the United States.

WHY IT EXISTS: Oil and Airline companies lobby against that kind of infrastructure. No individual who has the money has the interest for that kind of modern development.

14. How East Gainesville is a food desert.

WHY IT EXISTS: Companies like Publix do not think they could make a profit in such a poverty stricken area.

15. The lack of busses running during the night.

WHY IT EXISTS: Less riders at night. UF has the snap services instead. People use Uber.

16. That there are no trees in the North Butler Plaza development area.

WHY IT EXISTS: The city has not yet gotten around the planting trees. The amount of paper work it takes for planting trees is inconvenient.

17. That the Innovation Academy requires students to go to class over the summer.

WHY IT EXISTS: The University saw an opportunity to fill up summer classes with a program like the Innovation Academy.

18. Students crossing 13th between the standard and Publix.

WHY IT EXISTS: Students are impatient and see that traffic is usually stopped there. They have seen other people do it.

19. That news networks instill bias in their rhetoric.

WHY IT EXISTS: The media has the right to publish or air what they want.

20. That my backpack still gets wet when it is raining even if I am using my umbrella.

WHY IT EXISTS: Small umbrellas are too small to cover me and my backpack. Large umbrellas are just inconvenient.

Reflection:
I believe that the most challenging part of coming up with things that bug me was trying the find things I actually have a problem with.  I did not find it difficult because I have lived in Gainesville my entire life and I quite regularly talk about things around town that could be better.
